* Age — how old we are. We can grow up without growing old if we commit to lifelong learning. Usually, mental age is much more crucial than physical age.
* Brag — to talk boastfully. It’s acceptable to toot our own horn; just don’t blow it.
* Change — to make difference. We must practice continuous improvement and periodically reinvent ourselves in order to maximize our career opportunities.
* Destination — a place to which one is journeying. Before we arrive, we should be thinking about: “Where do I go next and what do I have to pack (i.e. skills) in order to get there?”
* Effort — conscious exertion of power. Luck comes disguised as hard work.
* Fun — something that provides amusement or enjoyment. Humor always derails stress, especially at work.
* Gluttony — excessive indulgence. Love and learning are the two things people should never have enough of.
* Hit-or-miss — maybe, maybe not. We always increase our hit rate (i.e. odds of success) by having a flexible plan.
* I — an overused personal pronoun. There is no “I” in success. No one succeeds without input and support from others.
* Jigsaw — a puzzle consisting of irregularly shaped pieces that are to be fitted together to form a picture. Every day presents an opportunity to find a piece that fits our life’s puzzle.
* Knocked out — what happens when we don’t see what’s coming. It’s important to know what’s happening in our firm, its industry and our profession.
* Logic — the application of formal principles of reasoning. Risk defies logic; leaps of faith often create innovation.
* Mind’s eye — the mental faculty of conceiving and recollecting images. We have to “see” the outcome of our vision in order to carry out our plan.
* Neutral — not engaged on either side. A lack of commitment means a lack of values.
* Omarosa — a self-absorbed backstabber from “The Apprentice” television show. She’s the poster child for how not to do business, yet she remains a legend in her own mind.
* Pride — reasonable or justifiable self-respect. If you don’t believe in yourself, don’t expect others to believe in you.
* Question — an interrogative expression often used to obtain or test knowledge. The only dumb questions are those that go unasked.
* Rah-rah — marked by enthusiastic experience. If we “do what we are,” Monday mornin’ will never be Monday moanin’.
* Stumbling block — an obstacle to progress. Don’t be afraid to ask others for advice and assistance when a problem is encountered. Be sure to say “Thank you.”
* Take-charge — having the qualities of a leader. Successful people make it happen rather than let it happen.
* Umpteen — very many. Thomas Edison found over 10,000 ways not to invent the light bulb. Colonel Harlan Sanders called on over 900 restaurant owners before he was able to convince one to try his fried chicken recipe.
* Visibility — being seen. Management must be aware of your contributions or you won’t get raises or promotions.
* Washed up — no longer needed. Old and young dogs must constantly learn new tricks.
* Xenogamy — cross-pollination. Lateral assignments are great ways to learn more about the company and the people in it.
* You Inc. - the concept of thinking you are a free agent, not an employee. When you stop learning from the job, it’s time to move on.
* Zen — achieving enlightenment through meditation, self-contemplation and intuition. We are what we think.
