Yellow Emperor asked Qibo and said: “What is the condition when the exogenous evil invades a man?” Qibo answered: “It depends on whether the invasion is in the upper part or in the lower part.” Yellow Emperor asked: “Is there any difference when invading the upper part and the lower part?” Qibo said: “When the upper part of the body contracts the disease, it is caused by the wind-cold and the exogenous evil, when the lower part of the body contracts disease, it is caused by the wetness-evil, thus, when the exogenous evil invades the body, it is not necessary in a fixed ways. When the exogenous evil invades the Yin channel, it can be transmitted to the six hollow organs, when the exogenous evil invades the Yang channel, it can cause disease on the location along the route where the Yang channel passes.”
Yellow Emperor said: “Although the Yang channel and the Yin channel are different in names, yet they all belong to the system of the channel and collateral, they connect each other in the upper part and the lower part, and the channel and the collaterals are linking to become an entirety like a ring without end. But when the evil injures a man, some are on the Yin channel and some are on the Yang channel; sometimes the disease is in the upper part, sometimes it is in the lower part, sometimes it is on the left side, and sometimes it is on the right side, and what is the reason?”
Qibo answered: “The three Yang channels of hand and foot are converging on the face and head. The evil energy often takes the advantage to invade when the body is in debility, fatigue right after hard labour and perspiration after taking hot food and drink when the striae of skin are open. When the face is hit by the evil energy, it will shift down to the Foot Yangming Channel of stomach. When its neck is hit by the evil energy, it will shift down to the Foot Taiyang Channel of bladder. When the cheek is hit by the evil energy, it will shift down to the Foot Shaoyang Channel of gallbladder. If the chest, back and the hypochondria are hit by the evil energies, they will shift down to the subordinative Yangming Channel, Taiyin Channel and Shaoyang Channel respectively.”
Yellow Emperor asked: “What is the condition when the Yin channel is invaded by the evil energy?” Qibo answered: “When the evil energy hits the Yin channel, the disease often starts from the arm and the leg. As the arm humerus and the leg tibia are on the inner side where the skin is thinner and the muscle is softer, so, when the body contracts the evil energy, it is the Yin channel that is apt to be injured.”
Yellow Emperor asked: “Can the evil energy injure the five-viscera?” Qibo answered: “When one contracts the evil energy, the five-viscera is not necessary to be injured, if the Yin channel is invaded by the exogenous evil, and the visceral energy of the patient has been substantial all the time, the evil energy can by no means to retain in the viscera, and it can not but return to the six-hollow-organ. Therefore, when the Yang channel is invaded by the evil energy, it will retain in the related channel and cause disease, when the Yin channel is invaded by the evil energy, it will retain in the six-hollow-organ and cause disease.”
Yellow Emperor asked: “some evil energies can injure the five-viscera, and what is the reason?” Qibo said: “Melancholy and anxiety can injure the heart. When the body catches cold and the cold water is drunken, the lung will be injured, as the two kinds of cold-evil can injure both the interior and the exterior, the disease of up-reversing of the lung energy will occur. If one falls from a high place causing the stagnated blood to retain inside or the patient flies into a fury, causing the vital energy rushes up without descending, the energy will be stagnating under the hypochondria and injures the liver. When one falls down or being hit, and he also fails to practice temperance in eating a drinking, or being overstrained in labour, his spleen will be injured. When one lifts the weight with difficulty, conducts sexual activities excessively or takes a bath or soaks in the water after sweating, his kidney will be injured.” Yellow Emperor asked: “Why is it that the five-solid organs can be injured by the wind-evil? Qibo said: “Both the solid organs and the hollow organs can be invaded, but it is only the external evil and the internal evil can cause the retention of the disease.” Yellow Emperor said: “Good.”
Yellow Emperor asked Qibo and said: “The head, face and the whole body are connecting the bone, tendon, blood and energy. In the cold season when the earth is frozen to become cracking, and the ice is accumulating, if the weather becomes even more cold suddenly, the hands and feet of a man will be shivering with cold and reluctant to move about, but the face is not necessary to be covered with clothes to keep away from the cold, and what is the reason?” Qibo answered: “The circulation of energy and blood in the twelve channels and the three hundred and sixty five collaterals are reaching the head and face first, and then enter into the various apertures. The refined energy pours up in to the eyes to enable the sight seeing. The channel energy moves aside reaching the ears below to enable the hearing. The air being sent to the nose to enable the smelling. The essential substance from cereals produces from stomach reaches up to contact the lips and tongue to enable the tasting. All the fluids of the energies can rise up to fumigate the face which is thick with firm muscle. As the Yang on the face is very hot, it can not be surpassed by the cold weather.”
Yellow Emperor asked: “what is the pathos when the evil energy invades a man?” Qibo said: “When the asthenic evil injures a man, the patient will have shivers and chilliness. When the wind of the four seasons injures a man, the disease is light, the patient appears to have slight change in the complexion, but his body is normal, it seems the disease has already disappeared yet seems the disease is still remaining inside; it seems that the patient is having a disease and seems to have no disease, and the condition of the disease can hardly be known.” Yellow Emperor said: “Good.”
Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: “I am told when a physician can know the pathos of the patient by examining his complexion, it is called explicitness; when he can know the pathos of the patient by palpating, it is called marvelousness; when one can know the pathos of the patient by inquiring and hearing the patient’s anamnesis, it is called skillfulness. I like to know why is it that the disease’s condition can be known by examining the complexion, the pathos can be known by palpation, and the location of the disease can be known by inquiring?” Qibo answered: “There are corresponding relations between the patient’s complexion, pulse condition and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm and the disease, they are like the responding sound when the drum is hit by the drumstick which can by no means fail to sound. They are correlated like the root and stem of a tree with its branches and leaves, but the diagnosis must not be identical with the common method, when the root dies, the leaves will be withered. Thus, none of the three aspects of the complexion examining, the pulse palpating and the skin of anterolateral side of the forearm diagnosing should be excluded. When one knows one aspect, he is skillful, when one knows two aspects he is marvelous, when one knows three aspects, he is an ingenious and ingenious physician.”
